Whistler 2010 Olympics

The 2010 Winter Games begin in: GAME ON!

With the closing ceremony in Beijing behind us, eyes of the world turn to Vancouver and Whistler as the venues for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010 and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010. Whistler is certainly counting down – it’s less than twelve months until the opening ceremony.

Whistler will be hosting the following events:

  • Alpine (downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom, combined)
  • Nordic (biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined)
  • Sliding (ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge, skeleton)
  • All Paralympic events

The Olympics have been a long time coming for North America’s most popular ski and snowboard resort. Franz Wilhelmsen, the man who opened Whistler for skiing in the 1960’s did so in the hopes of hosting the games here. Whistler tried numerous times to snare the games over coming years, albeit unsuccessfully. Although it did come close in 1975, the resort eventually missed out on their winter bid after Montreal, Quebec was awarded the Summer Games.

In 1998, Whistler again decided to bid for the Winter Olympics. Teaming up with Vancouver, the two communities won the Canadian nomination, and eventually the grand prize - the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Millions of athletes, spectators, organizers and media are expected to transcend on Whistler as 2010 approaches. The resort is busy preparing itself for the arrival of these visitors, working hard to ensure there are enough accommodations and personnel readily available to handle what is sure to be Whistler’s biggest moment yet.
